Do you want a flush look? Shop for hole-in-the-wall electric fires with coal effect fuel beds. We have everything you need to create a media-wall style feature, but unfortunately many of these styles only come with logs. Or, if you want a complete package, our electric fireplace suites make life very easy. These freestanding units combine a surround, back panel, hearth and integrated electric fire (many with coal or interchangeable coal/log fuel beds) and stand against a flat wall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do electric fireplaces give off heat?
Yes. Most electric fireplaces are designed as heaters, and typically offer between 1–2kW of output via a fan heater or some older style models have a convector at the front or bottom of the unit. All electric fires also have a ‘flame-only’ and ‘no-heat’ setting, which makes them excellent for zone heating.
Are flame-effect fires low maintenance?
Compared with solid fuel or gas, absolutely. There’s no ash, soot, chimney sweeping or servicing of burners. Maintenance is usually limited to occasional dusting of the unit, and after many years, may include replacing LED bulbs or a light module. Always follow the manufacturer’s servicing advice, but day-to-day, they’re one of the most hassle-free types of heating.
Can you use electric fireplaces 24/7?
You can usually run the flame effect for extended periods, even daily, provided vents stay clear, and the unit is used as directed. However, we don’t recommend running the heater at full power 24/7: it will be expensive and can overwork the appliance. Instead, we recommend using the thermostat, timer or smart controls (if fitted) to cycle the heat on and off.
Are coal effect fires energy-efficient?
Electric fires are essentially 100% efficient at the point of use: all the electricity they consume is converted into heat within the room. The LED flame beds on our coal effect electric fires also use very little power, especially in flame-only mode. What you get is a source of highly controllable, targeted heat that can be more economical than running your central heating.
Does an electric fire need a chimney or vent?
No. Electric models don’t use real combustion to generate heat, so they don’t need a flue or chimney. They just need a nearby socket and suitable clearance: this is what makes electric appliances so great in flats and new-build homes.
What style of interior do coal effect fires look best with?
These kinds of fires look best in classic interiors (lounges with period features), but they’re surprisingly adaptable. An inset coal bed in a brass or chrome trim looks great in a Victorian-style surround, while the best coal effect electric fires (minimalist black or brushed steel trims) look right at home with more contemporary furniture.
